What To Watch For - Tuesday

Day 2 Preview: Five Matches To Watch

[1] Simona Halep vs. Sloane Stephens

Top seed Simona Halep will open the day on Stadium Court with a blockbuster match against 2015 Citi Open champion Sloane Stephens. Stephens, a former world No. 11, has played just one tournament this summer since being sidelined for nine months with a foot injury. It’s a tough draw for both players, but it will make for a stellar start to Day 2. Temperatures are supposed to hit 87 degrees in Washington, D.C., Tuesday, so expect fitness levels to be a factor.

[2] Kristina Mladenovic vs. Tatjana Maria

Mladenovic, a newly minted top-15 player, holds a 3-1 record over Maria, but the 29-year-old German is experienced and crafty. She could test the big-hitting Frenchwoman.

[2] Kei Nishikori vs. Donald Young

Donald Young completed his three-set victory over fellow American Tim Smyczek in the wee hours of Tuesday morning. Tuesday evening, he’ll be back at it, this time against No. 2 seed and former champion Kei Nishikori. It may be unrealistic to expect an upset, but if Young is able to bounce back physically, we could be in store for some fun tennis on Stadium Court.

Kyle Edmund vs. Hyeon Chung

There are plenty of big names in action on Tuesday, but this matchup of two up-and-coming men’s stars could be one of the most intriguing. This will be the first meeting between 22-year-old Edmund of Great Britain and 21-year-old Chung of Korea. Ranked No. 41 and No. 53, respectively, we expect a fight to the finish.

Jean-Julien Rojer/Horia Tecau vs. Grigor Dimitrov/Lucas Pouille

Don’t forget about doubles! Jean-Julien Rojer and Horia Tecau have captured 14 titles together, including wins at Wimbledon and the ATP World Tour Finals, but they won’t have an easy first-round match on Tuesday. They’ll face off against two of the top singles players in the tournament: Grigor Dimitrov and Lucas Pouille. It’s always fun when unusual doubles matchups pop up during the summer hard-court season. We’ll definitely be keeping an eye on this one!

Gold medalist Monica Puig, the No. 2 American man Jack Sock, top men’s seen Dominic Thiem and Juan Martin del Potro will also be in action on Tuesday. Don’t miss a match!
